" I don't know when I laughed so hard, or had such a lump in my throat, as when I heard Esther speak to our group. What an inspiration." Elsie Austin, writer, Columbus, Georgia
Taking a break at the Pittsburgh screenwriting workshop. Ex-policeman, James Crawford, wrote a dynamite Serpico-genre screenplay, was a part of Janet Reno's political team when he moved to Florida, and has the attitude necessary to win; he never stops pitching and he never stops believing in himself and the story he has to tell.
Viacom Producer Donald Gold was co-facilitator.
About the book, "Dear Dean...Love, Mom"
My entire adult life has been spent in the film industry. But when Dean, an aspiring screenwriter/filmmaker, died, I vowed to stop my selfish little existence and turn to helping others like my precious son. I've loved every moment of it.
After Dean left, I began to meet people in the strangest ways. In every instance they had lost a loved one. These experiences had nothing to do with movies or moviemaking, though I did meet some of them (definitely not all of them) in my workshops. It was about something much deeper - but I couldn't figure out what. My boy never gave up on me. He stuck in there, saying with his messages from the Other Side, "You'll get it, Mom. Eventually." And I did! I got what it was he wants me - and everyone else who has ever lost a loved one - to know. And that's what the book, "Dear Dean...Love, Mom", is all about.
Now I make a new pledge: I will do my very best to speak everywhere and anywhere I'm invited. Dean's messages-to-Momma are to be shared. They aren't about me and they aren't about Dean. They are about everyone who needs assurances that life is eternal. He proved it to me beyond any doubt.
Robert Welabe and John Mendez were just two of the terrific and hard-working writers who attended one of my many Florida workshops. This particular one was especially popular: It was held at Burt Reynolds ranch. At 90, his dad made it all the more fun.
